Multi-faceted Learning

Manhattan’s

Arts Middle School

…to inspire a diverse community of young people to engage with the arts as a pathway to rich rigorous academic scholarship and creative purposeful life.

New York City Charter School of the Arts (CSA) is the only NY public charter middle school (grades 6-8) dedicated to the synergy of artistic, academic, and social/emotional learning as a model for whole child education. All students receive training in piano and music theory, visual arts and performance, and social activism as an integral part of their middle school experience. This focus on multiple perspectives gives students a rich experience and prepares them for a wide range of high school opportunities.

CSA is the only school in the SUNY portfolio that posted higher state exam results in 2022 than in 2019 - a testament to the impressive work of our staff to keep students learning during the pandemic. Through Our Arts Program, Students Master National Arts Standards, Are More Engaged In School And Develop As Inquisitive And Imaginative Learners. No Other Charter School In Manhattan Does This.

At City School of the Arts we Talk about Three Domains of Learning

Create

In Create, students use their imagination, practice risk-taking skills, and experience presenting finished products to audiences. Students are motivated to attend school and enjoy their learning. Each child gains an interdisciplinary and collaborative mindset while growing their creative and technical capacities with the development of strong communication and organizational skills.

Learn

Learn focuses on critical-thinking and problem-solving in Humanities, Math, and Science. Coherent writing, with claim, evidence, and reasoning are key components of all three disciplines. City School of the Arts is dedicated to supporting all types of learners to meet the demands of our academic program while additionally preparing students for the Algebra and Living Environments Regents exams.

Thrive

Education happens within the context of a larger community. Our approach extends beyond the classroom to help ensure students have the necessary support to do their best learning. In Thrive, the student’s socioemotional health and well-being are critical. We make certain that each student has a trusted adult advocate, and use a restorative approach to avoid and resolve conflicts amongst students and staff.

“I have been positively floored by the wonderful environment co-created by the students, faculty, and administrators at CSA. My high-achieving 7th grader has found academic challenge and celebration, as well as social connection and inclusion. I am absolutely inspired by the kindness and creativity of the CSA students. While we have yet another year here, already I feel sad at the thought of leaving. What a gem of a school!”
