Multi-faceted Learning

Manhattan’s

Arts Middle School

Good Morning America Shines a Spotlight on Our Whole-Child Approach

New York City Charter School of the Arts (CSA) is the only NY public charter middle school (grades 6-8) dedicated to integrating artistic, academic, and social/emotional learning as a model for whole child education. All students participate in training in piano and music theory, visual arts and performance, and social activism as a key part of their middle school experience. This focus on multiple perspectives offers students a rich experience and prepares them for a wide array of high school opportunities.

It’s A G Thing - New York City Charter School of the Arts Strengthens Curriculum with Industry Mentorship

Through our arts program, students master national arts standards, become more engaged in school, and develop into inquisitive and imaginative learners.

Three Domains of Learning

Children in CSA BeetleJuice Jr. the musical dressed in black and white striped costumes perform a dance on stage with black walls and purple stage lights.

Students unleash their imagination and take creative risks, then share their work with real audiences. This hands-on approach makes kids excited to come to school and genuinely love learning.

Through the creative process, students develop:

  • Creative and technical skills

  • Strong communication abilities

  • Organizational confidence

  • Cross-subject thinking

Result: motivated learners who see connections everywhere.

Create

Students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills in Humanities, Math, and Science. Each subject emphasizes the same essential skill: making convincing arguments supported by strong evidence.

We support every learner through:

  • Personalized academic support

  • Real-world problem-solving

  • Clear literacy teaching

  • Regents exam prep (Algebra & Living Environment)

Result: confident thinkers prepared for high school and beyond.

Learn

Learning occurs best when kids feel safe, supported, and connected. We go beyond academics to nurture the whole child.

Every student receives:

  • A trusted adult advocate by their side

  • Social-emotional support tailored to their needs

  • Restorative conflict resolution

  • Strong community connections

Result: confident, emotionally healthy kids who enjoy coming to school.

“I have been positively floored by the wonderful environment co-created by the students, faculty, and administrators at CSA. My high-achieving 7th grader has found academic challenge and celebration, as well as social connection and inclusion. I am absolutely inspired by the kindness and creativity of the CSA students. While we have yet another year here, already I feel sad at the thought of leaving. What a gem of a school!”
