NEW YORK CITY CHARTER SCHOOL OF THE ARTS

DISTRACTION-FREE SCHOOLS POLICY

SY 2025-26

PROCEDURE:

At the beginning of each school day as students enter the building, students turn in all non-school-issued internet-enabled devices in centralized storage cases, and the cases are secured during the school day in the main office. Students retrieve their devices when they exit the building after regular school or after-school programming.

If a student fails to check a phone, tablet, wearable, or non-CSA-issued laptop, the item will be returned only to an adult family member. Students will be given lunch detention or after-school reflection. If a student repeatedly violates this policy in a given school year, they will receive a suspension.

Students are permitted to use the phone in the office, provided they have a pass from class. Calls made home during school hours should be for emergencies only. To avoid any last-minute confusion, please make dismissal arrangements in advance and communicate with your student via email instead of a phone call.

Families may always reach their children by phone by calling the main office on (646) 793-6320.

This policy has been in place at CSA in preceding years, and will be expanded to include all internet-enabled devices pursuant to the law.

LANGUAGE FROM THE CSA 2025-2026 STUDENT & FAMILY HANDBOOK:

Students must always check the following items as they enter school each day:

  • Phones

  • Apple Watches and other smartwatches and wearables

The following Items may not be brought to school:

  • iPads and other tablets

  • Non-CSA-issued laptops and computers

  • Portable videogames such as Nintendo Switches

Personal devices are secured in the main office. Personal devices are returned to students at the end of the school day or at the end of after-school. Phones, watches, and other wearables are also not permitted at student events such as dances and during trips and other school activities.

If a student fails to check a phone, tablet, wearable, or non-CSA-issued laptop, the item will be returned only to an adult family member. Students will be given after-school reflection for failure. If a student repeatedly violates this policy in a given school year, they will receive a suspension.

The school is not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen items of any kind, either at school or off-site on school trips or during off-site activities.

Students may retain their devices if they are needed for medical purposes, such as blood glucose monitoring for a child with type 1 diabetes. Requests to do so may be made to the school’s leadership.
